An initial round of work has provided more in-depth knowledge of short-rotation
crops (SRC) of poplar and eucalyptus aimed at producing fuelwood or
pulpwood for paper or particle-board. Research has focused on elaborating
cultivation techniques. The second round of work comes under the programme
on combustion of special wastes. It has been concluded that it is technically
and economically feasible to substitute milled straw for sawdust in
cement kilns, with additional investment on the order of 48%.
Lastly, for energy production, economic modelling of crops to supply
a power plant will provide a tool for calculating the feasibility and
economic optimisation of this type of project once a favourable buy-back
price has been set for green power.
